I, Susan Z. Moran, was born in 1950 in Manchester, Connecticut. I graduated from high school in 1968 and in my early 20's I moved to Boston after a spell at the University of Connecticut. My art life lead me to Massachusetts College of Art where I studied silk screening, calligraphy, and figure drawing. In 1985 I graduated from Boston College at night, working full time during the day, with a degree in Business Administration. I married and moved to Silicon Valley, worked at Silicon Graphics as a Multimedia Manager in Corporate Marketing for nine years. I also received my degree at night in all aspects of Fashion Design/Illustration from Cañada Community College which finally led me down a most surprising path to Oil Painting. Oil painting has always held a fascination for me since I first visited an oil painting class as a young child at a museum in Hartford, Connecticut.
Over the last few years, I have taken basic oil painting classes, leading to studio work and then breaking out into plein air oil painting. I studied under several talented artists/instructors: Laurie Johnson Lepkowska, Kristen Olsen , Mark Monsarrat, Tom Chapman and Ray Mendieta, who have been inspirational and instrumental in my new found love of oils.
My current style is realistic and has allowed me to do commissioned pet portraits. I plan to try my hand at abstract painting in the coming year, studying Oil and Cold Wax medium.
